Happy Birthday to me!

We enjoyed the cute little seaport town of Cobh. The church is amazing! It took 47 years to build this neo Gothic work of art. St Coleman’s Cathedral sits on top of a tall hill and has been part of the Cobh skyline ever since its finished construction in 1911. The view of Cork Harbour and the Atlantic Ocean make it one of Ireland’s most scenic churches.
One street over is a row of colorful houses that domino down the hill to the waterfront…they are called the “Deck of Cards”.

With the two most important sights under our belts, we attempted to manuvere out of town down the NARROW streets… I only scored one mirror on a parked car. 🥴 Our destination was Blarney castle…with a goal of kissing the Blarney Stone on my birthday. The legend is you will receive luck if you kiss the stone…and 10 times the luck if it’s on your birthday. When I discovered it was over 200 steps to the top of the tower , then you lay on your back, someone holds your feet and you pull yourself out from the castle wall to kiss the outreached stone… I made an executive decision to christen a rock on the side of the castle as the SENIOR Blarney Stone and we all kissed it instead. Much easier and I’m lucky anyways.😜

Next, we drove further south to the Ring of Kerry, After getting lost for a short while when our GPS took us out into a cow pasture and said we needed to walk to our destination, we finally located our Air B&B house overlooking the water and Skellig Island. Great view!!! It’s near a small town (most towns in Ireland are like small villages) called Waterville. So we went into town and I had a wonderful Birthday dinner with 3 great ladies. Second time in my life to celebrate my birthday in Ireland…see I told you I am lucky.🍀

Next day (Lynde’s Birthday). country. Cissy decides to try her skills out on this “wrong side” race course ….and we head for the Dingle Peninsula. As we went thru one small “village”, she gained 2 mirrors to her credit 😫. Then when we stopped for gas, Connie volunteers to pump the gas and everyone jumps out of the car. After several attempts to local the button to open the gas tank, the delivery guy next to us who’s standing there shaking his head at three old ladies, tells us just to push the door and it pops open. So Connie next is struggling to get the hose in the tank and only able to get a little bit of gas out before it stops pumping on several attempts. I step over and see that she is trying to put diesel in the car🙃. In her defense, the diesel handle was black, and the unleaded was green…opposite of the USA. The delivery man says don’t worry, just fill it the rest of the way up with unleaded and go on down the road, so that’s what we did. I’m sure he thought…crazy American women!Another catastrophe avoided.

The town of Dingle housed a great fresh seafood cafe and there were some unique gift shops.. that of course, in which we found several treasures each. i drove the rest of the way around the peninsula and headed back to our cozy coastal house..with only 1 short pub stop 😜. Beautiful coastal views and great seafood. Ireland is awesome.

I believe traveling is the best classroom there is—no homework, no exams, just really good stories.
